Surfing in Essaouira: a gentle start on the Atlantic

Surf is the easiest way onto the water in Essaouira: no wind needed, lessons start in the white water close to shore on soft boards, and it works all year. The trick is timing. The wind usually builds during the day, so mornings tend to be better, and winter brings bigger swell than summer.

What is surfing like for a beginner?

You lie on a big, soft foam board, paddle, and learn to stand up as broken waves (the white water) push you towards the beach. Once you can stand and steer, you move out to unbroken, green waves.

How fast you progress depends on the waves, your fitness and how often you practise.

Who is surfing for?

  • Teens and adults who are comfortable in moving water
  • Families who want a shared activity that doesn't depend on wind
  • Visitors on a short stay: one 2-hour lesson is a complete experience
  • Kiters and wingers on a calm day

For children, ask the school about minimum age and group arrangements before you book.

When is the best time to surf in Essaouira?

Surf is possible all year. What changes is the size of the swell and the wind.

Winter (November to March): the offshore model shows bigger, longer-period swell, about 1.9–2.5 m with periods around 11 s. Good for improvers; beginners need the smaller days and the white water.

Summer (June to August): smaller, shorter-period swell (about 1.5–1.7 m, 6.5–7.3 s), but these are the windiest months, so surf early in the day.

Every month, mornings are lighter: in the model, the wind at 08–10 h (today's clock) averages 2.0 to 3.2 kn less than at 14–17 h.

Model data (ERA5, a grid of roughly 25–30 km) smooths local thermal and coastal effects, so real beach winds are often stronger. Use it to compare months, not as a promise.

What happens in a first surf lesson?

Every school has its own routine, but a first lesson usually looks like this:

  1. 1A safety briefing on the beach: where to surf, currents, how to fall and how to handle your board
  2. 2Practising the paddle and the pop-up (standing up) on the sand
  3. 3Riding white water close to shore, with the instructor nearby
  4. 4A short debrief and tips for your next session

At Essaouira Watersports, lessons are 2-hour sessions and equipment is included.
